Family Therapy
The process of family therapy entails creating a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment where, each family member can feel free to express his/her thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of criticism or judgment. This is especially true for children and teenagers who almost always exhibit some form of resistance in order to avoid any signs of disapproval, disappointment, frustration, or anger from their parents. Resistance can be seen in any or all family members in different ways such as defensiveness, arguing, anger, blaming others, shyness, feeling confused, lack of insight and finally an unwillingness to interact in the therapeutic process.Establishing an atmosphere of trust will break down these barriers and allow each family member to share his/her deepest concerns and struggles. Over time this process brings about an emotional security and closeness that establishes the ability and willingness for each member to continue to communicate openly within each individual relationship and within the family as a whole.
