Cognitive Re-training and Neurofeedback

Cognitive training is a research based treatment approach appropriate for ages five through adults designed to train a number of cognitive processes, including sustaining attention, working memory, impulsivity, processing speed, and problem solving. The activities are designed in concordance with brain based learning techniques and promote experiential learning. Protocols are customized for each client and are integrated into more traditional treatment plan. Training is started in the office and then a home cognitive brain training protocol is developed allowing for addition work to be completed at home.

Neurofeedback is a computer based program that measures neuronal activity at each sensor location that enables clients to control the pattern and flow of their mental energy by providing an electronic mirror of their brain activity on a computer screen. Neurofeedback teaches clients how to be in their mental state and they learn how to adjust their thinking in order to meet the established goal. Neurofeedback primarily focuses on increasing or decreasing interneuronal connections. Research indicates that in addition to creating new synapses and efficiency of existing synapses, new blood vessels are created and the changes result in long lasting physiological changes in the brain functioning.

Smartmind is unique in that the program actively measures EEG activity while filtering our facial movement (artifact). In addition brain wave feedback through full featured customizable graphing, clients can also play games, like racing, climb trees, making robots or play music cd’s or dvd’s. The program can also be conjunction with Captain’s Log Brain Games. By using the programs together, clients can learn to stay relaxed when faced with challenging cognitive exercises, which in turn improves their self control and regulatory skills. Skills improved when combining the two programs include working memory, mental processing speed, inhibition skills, and sustained attention. For many who have been told for years to “pay attention” or “stop doing that”, neurofeedback, combined with cognitive training actually teaches them how.
